How to Create a Pricing Formula That Honors Your Work and Your Worth
Share
One of the most common questions artists face—especially those new to selling—is:
"How do I price my jewelry?"
And honestly? It’s a big question. One that’s about way more than beads and wire. It’s about time. Energy. Experience. Purpose. And for many of us, healing.
If you’re trying to create a pricing strategy that sustains your creativity and your life, here’s a peek into what I do—and why it works.
My Jewelry Pricing Formula
I keep it simple and sustainable with this foundational formula:
(Total Cost of Materials) x 4 + My Hourly Rate = Final Price
Let’s break that down:
1. Total Cost of Materials
This includes every component:
-
Wire
-
Stones or beads
-
Clasps, jump rings, ear hooks
-
Packaging (yep, that counts too)
-
Display tags or cards
I add this up for each piece, down to the cent.
2. Multiply by 4
Why 4x? Because this accounts for:
-
Wholesale pricing (you’ll likely get 50% of retail in shops)
-
Profit margin (to grow, reinvest, or restock)
-
Business expenses (website, tools, marketing, market fees)
-
Wiggle room for the unexpected
3. Add Your Hourly Rate
Even if it only takes 15 minutes to wrap a pair of earrings, I don’t just price for those 15 minutes.
Why? Because…
It took me hours to source materials.
It took me days to design collections.
It took me years to learn the skills.
And it took me a lifetime to build a brand that now supports survivors of toxic cycles.
Every photo, caption, market, and moment coaching is time invested into the soul of this business. And that energy deserves to be compensated.
So What Should Your Hourly Rate Be?
If you're just starting out, you might feel hesitant to choose a number. But think of it this way:
-
What would you pay someone else to do this work?
-
What’s your time worth based on your experience and training?
-
What income do you need to make this sustainable?
Start there. And don’t be afraid to adjust upward as you grow.
Final Thoughts: Price with Purpose
Your jewelry is more than a product—it’s a reflection of your journey, your healing, your hands, and your heart.
So when you price it, make sure you honor that.
You’re not just selling earrings.
You’re selling art, story, intention, and impact.
Let your pricing reflect that.
